A police officer that caused a traffic accident was charged with four traffic offenses: Pleads guilty to two of them

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Thirty-two-year-old Police Corporal Arturo Leal who was accused of driving drunk and causing an accident, pleaded guilty to two of four traffic offenses he was charged with this week.

Leal appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Friday, charged with one count each of negligent harm, driving a motor vehicle without due care and attention, driving an unlicensed motor vehicle, and driving a motor vehicle whilst not being covered by a third party risk insurance.

He pleaded guilty to driving an unlicensed motor vehicle and was fined $50 plus $5.00 cost or court which he must pay by February 28, or face two months in jail. He also pleaded not guilty to driving a motor vehicle whilst not being covered by third-party risk insurance and was fined $250 plus $5.00 cost of court which he must pay by February 28, or face two months in jail.

For the other two offenses, he was granted bail in the sum of $1,200 plus one surety of the same which he was able to meet. He is due back in court on February 23.

The accident occurred on Tuesday, December 13, 2022, near Sandhill Village between Miles 14 and 15 on the Philip Goldson Highway. Leal crashed into the front driver’s side of a vehicle being driven by 38-year-old Colin Griffith. Officers on the scene allege that Leal had a strong smell of alcohol on him at the time of the accident but none of his charges reflected that allegation.
