By Benjamin Flowers: Belize has representation at almost every level in the Caribbean Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Olympiads this weekend.
The three-day, online event, hosted by the Barbados-based Caribbean Science Foundation, challenges participants in three events, Math, Coding, and Robotics, with age groupings from 12-14 years, 15-17 years, 18-21 years.
Belize is being represented by Belize High School, St. Catherine’s Academy, and a four-person group that registered independently, who will be competing against participants from Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Antigua, and Barbuda, Barbados, and Jamaica. Belize does not have any representation in the 12-14 years category.
The match competition was held on Friday, January 20, the Coding competition was held today, and the robotics showcase and award ceremony will be held tomorrow.
Orlando Medina, Belize Country Representative for the Caribbean Science Foundation, explained that the math competition carries a Jeopardy-style format where contestants choose from a category of mathematics such as algebra, trigonometry or calculus.
“In the coding competition, participants will be asked to develop either games, apps, or websites or any kind of coding tool or data analysis system that will address a problem in core theme areas such as food security, noncommunicable diseases, transportation financial education, geohazards, and climate change,” Medina said.
Medina said that the plan is to make the competition an annual regional event. He also said that he is pushing for the creation of the Belize Science Foundation, which will hold similar activities for the promotion of STEM education at the national level.
