Community Policing Unit and Cadets hold clean up and tree planting drive in Belize City

Posted: Saturday, January 21, 2023. 8:04 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Today, the Community Policing Unit (CPU) of the Belize Police Department and a number of Youth Cadets held a cleanup campaign and tree planting drive in Belize City.

The initiative, spearheaded by Head of Community Policing, Assistant Commissioner of Police Howell Gillett, took volunteers into the Yarborough and Pickstock areas as well as Lopez Mateo park in the King’s Park area.

“One of our objectives is to use community service as a way for young people to give back to their communities and make a difference in the lives of others,” Gillett said. “When young people participate in community service, they learn valuable life skills such as teamwork, responsibility, and leadership.”

Gillett went on to say that the initiative can grant the cadets a sense of fulfillment and fosters a sense of civic pride. He also noted that the community service hours will help to enhance their resumes for school and job applications.

He said that the CPU intends to hold such initiatives country-wide.
