International News: China downplays COVID-19 outbreak amidst Lunar New Year holiday rush

Posted: Saturday, January 21, 2023. 1:17 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Last month, China abandoned its zero-covid policy and since then, the country has reported a surge in COVID-19 infections.

On Friday, January 20, 2023, trains and buses across China were packed as relatives travel to celebrate the Lunar New Year with their loved ones, Reuters report.

Experts are concerned that the holiday rush could fuel another wave of infections.

This week, health officials in the country also reported a huge jump in COVID-19 hospitalizations.

Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) noted that hospitalizations rose by 70% on the week through to January 15.

At that time, Chinese scientists said that the number of COVID-19 patients in the hospital with severe conditions was declining.

However, there are still concerns of China’s official account of the COVID-19 outbreak since hospitals are overwhelmed.

The Chinese Government estimates that about 2 billion trips are expected to take place in preparation for the holiday.
