Premier League of Belize features Benque Viejo United vs Verdes, San Pedro Pirates vs Wagiya on Saturday night

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Premier League of Belize’s Closing Championship features games in Benque Viejo del Carmen and San Pedro on Saturday night as Week 2 gets underway.

After cutting down defending champions Altitude, Benque Viejo United tonight take on sub champions Verdes at 7:30 at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium. Verdes started out as a Benque team before spreading their wings and becoming a Cayo District club with a following across the entire district before going nationwide. Though they still have die-hard fans in Benque, Benque Viejo United are intent on taking advantage of the empty space left behind by the Green Machine who last season tried to regain some of their followers by playing a couple of their home games at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium.

While Benque Viejo United started off pumping Verdes despite their star-studded line-up, they struggled on Wednesday night managing a miserly 0-0 draw with the Bandits in the capital Belmopan.

Benque Viejo United are dubbing the match ‘El Derbi’. Expect it to be a vibrant display of good football not lacking in physical challenges from start to finish.

The other match tonight will be fought at the Ambergris Stadium in San Pedro with the home-standing Pirates hosting Wagiya at 7:00 pm. Going by last week’s games, the Pirates should come off with an easy victory. They beat Progresso 2-0 at home while Wagiya were squashed 5-0 by Port Layola at the Carl Ramos Stadium. However, logic is not a staple of football, and Wagiya, with their pride ‘all-shook-up’, are not going to roll over and die. Expect them to give San Pedro a good fight.

The other two games play on Sunday. Progresso will test champions Altitude at 3:30 pm at the People’s Stadium in Orange Walk Town while Port Layola will take on the Belmopan Bandits at 4:00 pm on Sunday at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex Belize City.
