U.S. Southern Command donates over 300 backpacks to students in Orange Walk

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On January 20, 2023, U.S. Ambassador Michelle Kwan alongside Minister of Education, Francis Fonseca handed over 380 backpacks and school supplies to students at the San Jose Government School in the Orange Walk District.

Since 2021, through U.S. Southern Command’s efforts to provide essential human services to vulnerable populations, the United States has provided over US$5 million in assistance through its Humanitarian Assistance Program.

This program has funded free medical clinics, medical supplies, ventilators, and the construction of school buildings and a fire station to the government and Belizean people.

“This donation by the American people is an investment in the future of the students in the Orange Walk community and reflects the United States enduring promise to stand with the people of Belize,” the U.S. Embassy noted.

“ We are proud to stand with the dedicated staff and students at the San Jose Government School by providing backpacks and school supplies to students which supports teaching and learning – connecting quality education with a healthy learning environment,” the Embassy added.
