Detained San Pedro man found dead by hanging in cell block

By Aaron Humes: Police are investigating a report of a man they detained apparently hanging himself in the cell block at the San Pedro Town Police Station overnight.

Around 3 this morning the officer on duty responded to detainees from the cell block calling out for the police. Upon making checks at the cell block area he observed that one of the detainees that was in the middle cell block was hanging from his neck in front of the cell block door motionless. The dead man was identified as Eric Gutierrez, 30, a Belizean Laborer of San Pedro Town.

The body was seen with a white shirt tied around his neck and onto the iron partition of the cell block above the cell block door, and was hanging in front of the cell block door with his body elevated about 3 inches off the ground.

Eric Gutierrez was detained at 3:05am for the crime of harm as a report was made against him by his ex-common-law wife, where doctor certified her injuries as harm. He was placed in the middle cell block along with another detainee.

No foul play is initially suspected as Police investigations continue.
