By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The San Pedro Pirates won their second consecutive in the Premier League of Belize on Sunday as they defeated Wagiya 4-2 at home at Ambergris Stadium in San Pedro.

The score, however, belies the action on the field as the San Pedro Pirates had to twice rally back after falling behind. The islanders didn’t breathe a sigh of relief until the 87th minute when Louis Valdez scored the go-ahead goal.

Up to that moment the game was tied 2-2.

Wagiya started out on a firm footing with Kleron Cacho scoring the opener in the fifth minute. The Pirates fought back, egged on by their home crowd, and tied the match courtesy of Andir Chi in the 17th minute.

The match remained tied until Wagiya regained the lead in the 57th minute on a goal by Leston Garcia. The Dangriga side were in the lead until Valdez evened the score in the 79th minute from a penalty kick. Wagiya claim their defender Darnae Garcia who went to clear the ball was fouled by the San Pedro forward Horace Avila. The referee saw it the other way around..

When Valdez hit again in the 87th, to put the Pirates ahead 3-2, Wagiya went for the tying goal. But the Pirates had the upper hand and Mario Chimal put the game 4-2 in the 90th + 2’ securing their second win in an equal number of games.

The score looks good and is good for San Pedro, but they suffered immensely to come off with the victory on Saturday night. Not bad for a team that lost Jose Tinoco, one of their key defenders, to a shoulder injury in their first game last week against Progresso. The Pirates reported that Tinoco fractured a shoulder blade and clavicle.

For Wagiya, the match was an improvement over last week’s trouncing by Port Layola though it resulted in another loss. They are hoping that they can bounce back in the next match against Southern rivals and National Champions Altitude at home in Dangriga. San Pedro face Bandits in Belmopan.

In the other Saturday match, Verdes edged Benque United 1-0 in Benque Viejo del Carmen.
