Verdes edge Benque Viejo United 1-0 in the Premier League of Belize’s Cayo derby

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Verdes defeated Benque Viejo United 1-0 to gain their first win in the Premier League of Belize’s Closing Championship in front of a packed Edmund Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo del Carmen on Saturday night.

New acquisition, Mexican Marco Antonio Zavala converted the only goal of the highly intense match. Benque United were coming off a 1-0 win over champions Altitude but couldn’t emulate the feat against their district rivals, the Green Machine.

Under the guidance of new coach, Argentine Martín Andrade, Verdes now total four points from a draw and a win while Benque United have three from a win and a loss.

Next week, Verdes play at home against Belize City’s Port Layola while Benque United host Progresso.

In the other Saturday match, the San Pedro Pirates beat Wagiya 4-2 at home at Ambergris Stadium in San Pedro.
