By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Football Federation of Belize (FFB) on Monday announced that ex-Verdes coach David Pérez Asensio is to take over full-time as Belize Men’s National Team (BMNT) Head Coach.

Pérez already headed the BMNT last year in the Concacaf Nations League B, losing three games and drawing one, but did so temporarily as he was still Verdes coach.

Pérez, who hails from Spain, worked two seasons as the man at the helm of the Green Machine leading them to two National Championships out of three. Under his guidance, Verdes won the FFB Top League 2021-22 national opening and closing championships and the subchampionship in the Premier League of Belize’s 2022-2023 Opening Championship.

The FFB seems to have been pleased with his work with Verdes because they hired him last year and must also have been satisfied with his turn with BMNT, despite the losses, that they are now taking him on full-time.

The FFB said Pérez will also assist FFB Technical Director Philip Marin with all the National Team Programs.

“Coach Perez holds a National Coach Level 3 UEFA Pro License and a Masters Degree in Sports Management,” the FFB said in a press release.

“His coaching experience includes Anhui FA (China First Division) Head Coach, A.D. Alcorcon U20 (Spanish Second Division Team) Head Coach and Verdes FC (Premier League of Belize) Head Coach.”

Pérez will lead Belize in our two last games in Group D of the Concacaf Nations League B against Guatemala on Friday, March 24, at the FFB Stadium and against the Dominican Republic on Monday, March 27 at the Félix Sánchez Olympic Stadium in Santo Domingo.

Belize lost 0-2 to the Dominican Republic here, 0-2 to Guatemala in Guatemala City, drew 1-1 with French Guiana here, and fell 0-1 to French Guiana in Cayenne.

Currently Belize is in fourth place with only one point. French Guiana lead Group D with 10 points, followed by Guatemala with 7, and the Dominican Republic with 4. The BMNT scored one goal and allowed six.
