International News: 10 killed in mass shooting at Lunar New Year celebration in Monterey Park, LA

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Authorities in Monterey Park, Los Angeles say that a lone gunman opened fire at a Lunar New Year celebration killing 10 people then killing himself, Aljazeera reports.

Police say the gunman was later found dead inside a van he had used to flee the scene.

The gunman was identified as Huu Can Tran, 72, and authorities say he shot himself as police were approaching the van.

Ten more people were wounded in the attack.

Late Saturday, residents had gathered at a ballroom dance club for the Lunar New Year celebration when the gunman entered and opened fire.

Witnesses said that people ran out screaming.

California Governor, Gavin Newsom said that the night should have been one of celebration but instead, “they were the victims of a horrific and heartless act of gun violence.”

Before arriving at Monterey Park, Tran had reportedly entered another dance venue in Alhambra but attendees managed to grab the gun and Tran fled.
