International News: Taiwan President writes to Pope saying war with China is not an option

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Taiwan’s President, Tsai Ing-wen wrote a letter to Pope Francis in response to the Pope’s World Peace Day message on January 1 saying that a war with China is not an option, Reuters report.

President Tsai said that only from respecting Taiwan’s sovereignty and freedom can there be healthy ties with Beijing.

The Vatican is Taiwan’s only European diplomatic ally and Taiwan is closely monitoring moves to improve relations with China by Pope Francis.

In addition, President Tsai said that the war in Ukraine has made the world appreciate the value of peace.

“In my National Day speech last year, I reiterated that peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait are the foundation for the development of cross-Strait relations and armed confrontation is absolutely not an option,” Tsai stated.

“Only by respecting the commitment of the Taiwanese people to our sovereignty, democracy, and freedom can there be a foundation for resuming constructive interaction across the Taiwan Strait,” she added.

The President also said that though Taiwan is still excluded from the World Health Organization, they are convinced that taking the lead in making positive contributions will drive a ‘virtuous circle’.
