Posted: Monday, January 23, 2023. 4:58 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the Ministry of Economic Development launched the Medium-Term Development Strategy (MTDS).

The MTDS is a plan to serve as the national source for strategic planning, giving the Government a pathway to achieving multidimensional development objectives.

Minister of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management, Orlando Habet says that protection of the environment will be the ministry’s primary focus.

“We are committed to seeing through Strategic Objective 5 on “Protection of Environment” as our primary focus. With the completion of the Plan Belize Medium Term Development Strategy, my Ministry is refining its strategic objectives and targets to ensure close alignment. We are guided by our overarching goal to contribute to Belize’s sustainable development, improve climate resiliency, and achieve better disaster risk reduction,” Habet stated.

The Plan-Belize Medium Term Development Strategy (PBMTDS) is the Government’s blueprint for the next 4 years to improve the standard of living for Belizeans.

In addition, Habet said that through the Sustainable Development Unit (SDU), the ministry will work in close collaboration with the Ministry of Economic Development (MED) specifically as part of the Secretariat responsible for leading the coordination of the implementation of the plan, co-lead along with the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) the development of a robust Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning framework to accompany the strategic plan.

The Ministry committed to integrate green financing, mainstream climate change adaptation and disaster risk management policies and strategies across the whole-of-government for improved sustainable development outcomes.

The policy objectives include enhancing national climate change mitigation and adaptation as spelled out in Belize’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) and the National Climate Change Office’s strategic plan, the expansion of green/sustainable value chains which represents a paradigm shift from conventional linear value chain to a cyclical system, strengthening biodiversity conservation and protection which supports efforts in disaster risk mitigation, value chain development, inclusivity and ensures healthy ecosystems and strengthening environmental stewardship in the private sector to support and develop our green and blue economies.

Habet encouraged all Belizeans to embrace the vision and act on this strategic plan by taking the responsibility to fulfil their part.
