By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Port Layola are having the best start of the Premier League of Belize’s 2022-2023 Closing championship picking up their second win in a row with a 2-0 blanking of the Belmopan Bandits on Sunday.

A minute of silence in honour of Dion ‘Pussy’ Flowers, footballer and youth sports organizer who passed away on Thursday, was observed before the match got underway.

Michael Palacio scored the opener in the 3rd minute at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex in Belize City. Palacio now leads all goalscorers with three goals. Palacio scored two last week against Wagiya.

Gilroy ‘Bredda’ Thurton hit the second and definitive goal in the gasping moments of the first half at the 45’+2’.

Port, though tied at six points with the San Pedro Pirates, remain at the top of the PLB by virtue of a better goal difference having scored seven goals and not allowed any. San Pedro have netted the ball six times but have been scored upon twice.

The Bandits are in seventh place with one point in two games.

This coming weekend Port travel to Cayo to face Verdes while the Bandits host the San Pedro Pirates.

In the other Sunday match, Progresso drew 0-0 with Altitude while on Saturday, San Pedro Pirates beat Wagiya 4-2 and Verdes edged Benque Viejo United 1-0.
