By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Monday, former President of Guatemala, Alvaro Colom, 71, died from esophageal cancer, Reuters report.
Colom was President of Guatemala from 2008 to 2012.
He had been ill and was released from the hospital just over a week ago, former security minister, Carlos Menocal said.
Guatemalan President, Alejandro Giammattei has extended sympathies to his family and friends.
“To his family and friends I express my heartfelt condolences, may God comfort them in the face of such an irreparable loss,” Giammattei said.
In 2007, Colom became Guatemala’s first leftist president since the country’s civil war ended in 1996.
