By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Monday, the trial commenced for one of Mexico’s former top cops, Genaro Garcia Luna in the U.S., Daily News reports.
Prosecutors say that Garcia Luna was receiving payments from Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman’s Sinaloa cartel to keep drugs flowing to the United States.
Garcia Luna served as Mexico’s Secretary of public security.
Reports indicate that he is accused of taking briefcases full of cash from the Sinaloa cartel while it was run by kingpin Guzman.
Prosecutors say that from 2006 to 2012 when Garcia Luna ran Mexico’s equivalent to the FBI, the cartel kept their operation going by paying to buy off the federal police.
When El Chapo was sentenced to life in 2019, Jesus Zambada Garcia testified to personally delivering briefcases with millions in cash to Garcia Luna in a Mexican restaurant.
Garcia Luna would then leak sensitive law enforcement information and allow cocaine to pass through checkpoints.
In addition, Garcia Luna is accused of turning the federal police officers into bodyguards, drug couriers and “armed mercenaries” for the cartel.
