Venezuela’s Nicolas Maduro calls for regional unity and organization as Belize and Mexico meet at Summit of CELAC Heads of State and Government in Argentina

By Aaron Humes: The Seventh Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) is underway in Argentina.

Belize is there, represented by Minister of Foreign Affairs Eamon Courtenay, who today tweeted a picture with Mexican counterpart Marcelo Ebrard.

Belize and its northern neighbour have renewed ties following the visit of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador last year, reciprocating that of Prime Minister John Briceno. The countries are cooperating on issues of the economy, tourism, transportation, and others.

Meanwhile, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has called for the bloc’s unity against foreign “interventionism,” calling on CELAC member countries to demand the cessation of interventionism against free countries of the continent. He stressed the need to “join forces and efforts to reject all kinds of interventionism by forces or powers outside our region”.

“The time has come for CELAC to begin to build itself from within with a clear vision of what the future of our countries should be and the need to lay solid foundations for the construction of the union”, according to Maduro.

The Venezuelan leader further proposed the creation of a general secretariat to consolidate “an own organizational architecture” that allows articulating “all the initiatives of our countries on a day-to-day basis, 365 days a year” as well as the reactivation of the Councils of Ministers, a body that in the first stage of CELAC meant “a great strength and a real presence in the life of our governments, our States and our countries”. Groupings around defense, health, education, culture, and the economy would assist with articulating regional needs, he stated.

Maduro concluded, “The union for liberation, that is the call from Bolivarian Venezuela that we make to our brothers and sisters in Latin America and the Caribbean.”
