By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Monday, Mexican President, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said that the country is seeking to recover $700 million that former security official Genaro Garcia Luna allegedly accumulated as a result of corruption, the Associated Press reports.
Garcia Luna is currently on trial in the U.S. accused of accepting briefcases full of cash from the infamous Sinaloa cartel as the cartel continued operations and sent tons of cocaine to the U.S.
Garcia Luna was the secretary of public security to then-President Felipe Calderon from 2006 to 2012.
The Mexican President says that when corrupt politicians and drug traffickers are convicted in the United States, the U.S. seizes and keeps their assets which were largely made in Mexico.
