By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Wednesday, the U.S. Transportation Department said that it is investigating Southwest Airlines holiday meltdown that left thousands of travelers stranded in December, the Associated Press reports.

The department noted that the scheduling of too many flights would be considered an unfair and deceptive practice under federal law.

“DOT is in the initial phase of a rigorous and comprehensive investigation into Southwest Airlines’ holiday debacle that stranded millions,” the department said.

In addition, the department said that it will hold the airline company accountable if the airline didn’t follow federal rules about refunds and reimbursing customers when flights were canceled.
