International News: UN urges Colombia to strengthen rule of law in areas hit by violence

Posted: Thursday, January 26, 2023. 9:24 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Wednesday, Volker Turk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights urged Colombia to strengthen the rule of law to tackle violence in areas affected, Reuters report.

Turk commended President Gustavo Petro for his commitment to implement total peace throughout the country.

Petro says he is committed to end Colombia’s almost 60 years of internal armed conflict, which left about 450,000 dead between 1985 and 2018.

Turk noted that there is weak state presence in rural areas where violence is rampant.

“There is no doubt in my mind that the rule of law in areas that are particularly affected by violence and conflict needs to be consolidated through strengthening the presence and capacity of state civilian institutions,” Turk said.

The country’s ombudsman said that a record 215 human rights activists and social leaders were killed in 2022.
