Man paralyzed after being shot by police hit with six criminal charges after hospital release

Posted: Thursday, January 26, 2023. 2:31 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Eleven days after 27-year-old Andel Alvarez was shot by police in southern Belize, he was released from the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) and immediately charged with six criminal offenses.

Alvarez, whose injury left him paralyzed, was discharged from the KHMH on Wednesday and taken to the Belize City Magistrate’s Court where he was arraigned in the back of a police mobile patrol unit with his sister holding him to support him. Senior Magistrate Tricia Pitts-Anderson came outside to conduct the arraignment.

He was charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a firearm which was committed upon three police officers, one count of kept unlicensed firearm in relation to a .9mm pistol, one count of kept unlicensed ammunition in relation to eight live .9mm rounds, and one count handling stolen goods in relation to a motorcycle found in his possession which was reportedly stolen.

Alvarez pleaded not guilty to all charges and was granted bail in the sum of $10,000 plus two sureties of $4,000 each and one surety of $2,000, which he was able to meet. As a part of his bail conditions, Alvarez was placed on house arrest and is only allowed to leave his home to go to his designated police station to sign in.

He was then transported, with the assistance of emergency medical personnel, back to Punta Gorda Town.

On the night of Saturday, January 14, Alvarez was shot while running away from Роlісе Cоnѕtаblе Luеllа Whуtе and two other officers. Reports are that the officer had instructed Alvarez, who was riding a motorcycle, to stop, but he tried to escape. The motorcycle allegedly failed so Alvarez tried to flee the scene on foot and allegedly pointed a firearm at police prompting PC Whyte to fire a single shot that injured him.

PC Whyte is currently being investigated by police to determine if her force was justified and what, if any, charges will be levied against her.
