By Rubén Morales Iglesias: After meeting with vegetable producers on Thursday, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) said it expects more local vegetables in the market.

MAFSE said that as production continues for priority crops such as lettuce, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, potatoes, carrots, purple cabbage, beets, and onions continues, consumers will see an increase in local produce at the retail markets.

The statement comes after MAFSE met with the producers from the various productive sectors at its annual National Vegetable Stakeholders Meeting at the National Agriculture and Trade Showgrounds in Belmopan.

“The meeting focused on the present status of the national vegetable crop production season 2022-2023,” MAFSE said.

“Other items discussed were the validation of the production data reported to date, as well as constraints being faced by farmers in terms of productivity, harvesting and marketing of their produce.”

MAFSE said the National Vegetable Stakeholders Meeting was attended by farmers, personnel from the Belize Agriculture Health Authority, Belize Marketing and Development Cooperation, and extension officers from the ministry.

“The Ministry of Agriculture continues its collaboration with stakeholders and emphasizes its support for farmers and local producers,” MAFSE said.

Apart from meetings like this, MAFSE through its program and in conjunction with other organizations like the Resilient Rural Belize program, have been working hand in hand with farmers, particularly small farmers, to improve quantity and quality of production.
