Punta Gorda Community Hospital receives Ambulance from United States Embassy

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: United States Ambassador Michelle Kwan on Thursday handed over an ambulance to Dr. Julio Sabido, Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Health and Wellness, on behalf of the United States Embassy.

“This donated ambulance will have an immediate impact on the communities of southern Belize by helping patients more quickly receive the urgent care that they need, which can mean the difference between life and death in a crisis,” emphasized Ambassador Kwan said at the handling over ceremony at the Punta Gorda Hospital.

“It underscores the United States’ continued commitment to protecting the health and safety of the Belizean people.”

The U.S. Embassy said the objective is for the ambulance to provide “timely public health and disaster relief in Punta Gorda and surrounding areas of southern Belize where emergency transportation services are limited”.

While it is expected that the ambulance will provide transport for approximately 40 patients monthly to access the Southern Regional Hospital in Dangriga, a service that up to now had not been available, the ambulance should also facilitate 6,000 Punta Gorda residents and surrounding rural communities “with faster access to life-saving medical assistance”.

The U.S. Embassy said its Health Unit trained 50-plus healthcare workers from the Punta Gorda hospital and the Toledo District polyclinics on Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Basic Life Support.

The Minister of Rural Transformation and Community Development Oscar Requena, the Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Michael Espat, and the Mayor of Punta Gorda Town Charles Selgado were present at the ambulance handing over ceremony.
