By Aaron Humes: This morning, the Police Department announced that its Professional Standards Branch, after investigation, determined that detainee of San Pedro Town, Eric Gutierrez, “did indeed take his own life consistent with suicide.”

Gutierrez was found hanging from the door of the cell with a white T-shirt he had been wearing wrapped around his neck and tied to the door, barely ten minutes after being booked into the station pending a charge of harm.

The PSB, according to Police, made recommendations to the Commissioner of Police to try to deter any other such incidents of this nature. It is already standard practice that belts and shoelaces are removed from detainees when entering the detention cells to guard against attempts at suicide and self-harm. However, routine checks on detainees are every half-hour.

According to the San Pedro Sun, family members await the results of a post-mortem examination to satisfy them as to Eric’s cause of death. They insist he was not known to be depressed or have suicidal tendencies.
