By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Orange Walk Cooperative Department on Friday held a training workshop on the preservation of supers for Orange Walk Beekeepers Society.

The training session organized by the Orange Walk Cooperative Department was conducted by Edwardo Leiva at the Yo Creek Agriculture Station on the outskirts of Orange Walk Town.

“The purpose of the training was to educate beekeepers on the preservation of supers after the harvesting season, as well as to avoid moth invasion and small hive beetles,” said the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE).

“Honey supers are the part of a beehive in which honey is collected. A super is a box that is placed on top of the hive, and inside of every super, there are 8-10 hanging frames. These frames hold honey and honeycomb.”

MAFSEE said the training serves as a cost cutting measure for beekeepers.

The training is part of the MAFSE ongoing program to help the beekeeping industry. On Thursday, January 12, National Beekeeping Coordinator Miguel Huertas conducted a one-day training session for six beekeepers from Lucky Strike Village. That training session looked at hive expansion, supplement feeding, pre-harvest, and general beekeeping issues.
