Community Policing Unit takes Dangriga cadets on a field trip

Posted: Sunday, January 29, 2023. 10:13 am CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: More than 10 police cadets from Dangriga were taken on a field trip this weekend by the Community Police Unit (CPU) of the Belize Police Department.

The initiative was held on Saturday, spearheaded by the head of the CPU, Assistant Commissioner of Police Howell Gillett.

The cadets were taken to Sabal’s cassava project and saw how cassava bread, plantain flour, sahou, starch, and other products are made. The kids were next taken to a butterfly farm where they witnessed all stages of the butterfly.

“We are of the view that this kind of tour is an important learning experience for children because they provide hands-on, real-world learning opportunities that can supplement and enhance what is taught in the classroom,” Gillett said. “These trips can also help to bring abstract concepts to life, making them more meaningful and memorable for students.”

The initiative forms a part of a greater effort by the CPU to use education as a means of preventing crime by empowering youths to make better life choices as well as exposing them to fields that can economically empower them.
