By Aaron Humes: While it was officially formed on January 1, the Belize Defence Force (BDF) typically observes its anniversary on the final weekend of the month.
The BDF was formed in 1978 via the amalgamation of the Belize Volunteer Guards and the Police Special Force. The former had existed in various forms since the establishment of the settlement as a Crown Colony and following the defeat of a West Indian regiment by Maya settlers in modern-day Orange Walk.
On Friday, those ceremonies were held under the theme “Resilient Professionals, Service above self, the BDF at 45.”
There was a parade held at the Sir Colville Young Parade Square, at Price Barracks, Ladyville.
The troops on parade were inspected by Deputy Prime Minister Cordel Hyde.
In attendance was Governor-General and representative of the Commander-in-Chief of the Force Dame Froyla Tzalam, Minister of National Defence and Border Security Florencio Marin Jr, Minister of State Oscar Mira, and other distinguished guests including members of the Louisiana National Guard, United States Southern Command, Honduran Army, Mexican Armed Forces and other partner nations.
The keynote address was done by the Deputy Prime Minister who recognized the tireless work the army does in challenging conditions – noting their service during Hurricane Lisa as well as at the borders and even overseas.
The BDF hosted its annual open day, the BDF Day, on Saturday at Price Barracks.
