Family of Akeem Augustine say they believe his remains are those found in Jane Usher area on Friday

Posted: Monday, January 30, 2023. 9:39 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: While police await a full and positive identification through DNA testing and other means, the family of Akeem Augustine is sadly positive that it was their son and relative whose body was discovered on Friday evening, about five weeks after he first went missing on Christmas Day.

Speaking to reporters, family members have said they were able to recognize a tattoo on his back and the clothing he was wearing – a purple ¾ pants. They noted that because the tattoo was still visible despite the advanced stage of decomposition, it suggested that he was killed more recently than believed, and thus to them, a failure by police to investigate and potentially prevent his death.

The family also claims his head and limbs were missing, which Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero declined to confirm when questioned by reporters today.

According to ACP Romero, “We are awaiting a post-mortem examination at this time and we are trying to establish the identity of this person. Based on the postmortem, we will do further investigation through DNA to determine who this person is.” Asked specifically if any family members of currently missing persons from Belize City had come forward to try to identify the remains, he said that would be done during the examination.
