By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Saturday, Colombia’s Defense Ministry announced that the country had seized more cocaine in 2022 than any other year on record, Reuters report.
Law enforcement authorities say that 671 tons of cocaine was seized in 2022 surpassing the 2021 total by 1.7 tons.
Defense Minister, Ivan Velasquez says that it is crucial to combat illicit money coming from drug trafficking.
“It is necessary to combat the illicit income that comes from drug trafficking, which generates evil in our country,” Velasquez said.
The production and trafficking of cocaine is considered the main cause of an almost six-decade armed conflict in Colombia that has left over 450,000 people dead and millions displaced.
