In 2022, for the first time in 60 years, China’s population recorded a decline. Deaths outnumbered births for the first time in 2022.

For many years, the country stuck to its 1-child policy until it was increased to 3 in 2021.

In Sichuan, unmarried couples will also now be allowed to raise children.

China is also known for historically favoring boys over girls which led to many forced abortions.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has now made boosting birth rates a priority.
