Accused burglar warned after complainant alleges unwarranted contact in court

By Aaron Humes: A man accused of entering the home of his estranged common-law wife intending to do harm avoided revocation of his bail despite complaints by his accuser that he initiated unwarranted contact with her via social media.

46-year-old Dirk Thurton will be tried on May 10 on the charge after being provided with disclosure during his court appearance on Monday.

But before he could leave, the complainant asked to be heard in court, telling the Magistrate that Thurton had allegedly contacted her via the social media application WhatsApp, in alleged violation of his conditions of bail.

The Magistrate reminded Thurton of his undertaking but elected not to revoke bail at this time.

Thurton was arraigned on charges of burglary, harm, and wounding in November. Due to his having contracted cancer and needing treatment, the court granted bail despite objection by the prosecution, including conditions that stipulated he was not to contact the complainant, any of her family members, or visit her home, and to avoid any further incidents of domestic violence among others.
