By Aaron Humes: Beginning on Wednesday, February 1st, 2023, Liquefied Petroleum gas (LPG) prices will see a $6.00 increase per 100 lb tank, or 28 cents increase per gallon, according to the Supplies Control Unit (SCU) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise.
The new prices for LPG were published this evening. They are $1.28 per pound in Belize City and the towns and $1.30 per pound in rural areas, up six cents from the last announcement on January 10. That means a 100-pound cylinder of “butane” now costs $128 if you’re in the urban areas and $130 otherwise.
The per-gallon prices are $4.00 wholesale, $5.60 retail (urban) and $5.70 retail (rural). An increase in the acquisition price for both propane and butane, the primary components of LPG is credited for the fall in prices. At this time of the year, prices rise concurrent with greater heating demands in colder countries including the United States, where Belize buys the bulk of its supply from.
This price increase follows consecutive price decreases that occurred towards the end of 2022, and in early 2023.
