International News: Colombian officials say violence falls in 1st month of ceasefire

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Colombian Interior Minister, Alfonso Prada says that ceasefire with 4 armed groups has led to significant reductions in violence, Reuters report.

Colombia’s President, Gustavo Petro has committed to seek peace deals with armed groups following almost 60 years of conflict that left about 450,000 people dead.

On New Year’s Eve, President Petro decreed ceasefires with the armed groups.

“Attacks, effects, assassinations, murders and injuries of our armed forces have been significantly reduced and the deaths of civilians have also been significantly reduced, by a very high percentage,” Minister Prada said.

He added that mass killings were down 50%.
