By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, fifty Belizeans received the keys to their new starter homes at Blackberry Ridge Estates.

The project was implemented by the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH) for this new housing site near Burrell Boom.

Fourteen lots have been reserved for future development and 2.5 acres have been left for green space.

Each house lot is about a quarter acre and the community has 2 miles of road access.

Prime Minister John Briceño, Minister of Infrastructure, Development and Housing, Julius Espat, Deputy Prime Minister, Cordel Hyde, Minister of Tourism and Diaspora Relations, Anthony Mahler, and Area Representative, Marconi Leal were at the handing over.

Minister Espat says that this administration, the People’s United Party administration believes that housing is a basic right just like access to food and water.

“That is how important housing is because once we recognize what it is to be a human being, only then can we appreciate that if someone has a right to life, then that someone has a right to what is required to live that life and housing and shelter is right there,” Espat said.

“This is what the Government of Belize is doing, this is what the Prime Minister of Belize has given us the mandate to do, this is what we lobby for in cabinet,” he added.

Prime Minister Briceño says that the Government’s aim is to be able to build starter homes that people can afford. The Prime Minister said that the Government of Belize is in discussions for partnering with the private sector in projects where the Government would put streets, water, and light and make the investment so that people can benefit from the homes.

“The idea is that part of (money that will be acquired for housing) will be put into financial lending institutions so that teachers, policemen and BDF, public officers, and many more will be able to afford to pay a mortgage. We can partner with the private sector to ensure that the middle class can benefit,” he stated.

PM Briceño says that this Government is working daily to make the lives of all Belizeans better.

Chief Executive Officer in the MIDH, Victor Espat extended gratitude to the Prime Minister for believing in this project, Minister Julius Espat for implementing and supporting the project and the entire team at the MIDH for their commitment to making this project that will benefit these families a reality.
