By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Salvadoran Government has opened one of Latin America’s largest prisons, with capacity for 40,000 people, Reuters report.
President Nayib Bukele began a crackdown against gangs in the country in March, 2022 and since then, the state of emergency has been renewed every month.
The Terrorism Confinement Center was inaugurated on Tuesday to help relieve some of the overpopulation in the country’s prison system.
Authorities in the Central American nation have detained over 62,000 suspected gang members.
According to reports, almost 2% of the country’s population are now behind bars and the country has the highest incarceration rate in the world.
Over 600 troops and 250 police officers will secure the new prison.
