By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH) on Wednesday officially opened Blackberry Ridge Estate, a new housing site in Burrell Boom, and already promised two more phases.
As part of the first phase, the MIDH on Wednesday handed over climate-resilient 50 starter homes to 50 Belizeans in a new community one mile from the Burrell Boom Road. In welcoming the new homeowners, area representative Marconi Leal said Burrell Boom is 35 feet above sea level.
The next phase, MIDH Minister Julius Espat said, will include more houses and other amenities such as preschool and sports facilities.
“This one is 50 homes. We already signed a contract to build 50 more,” Minister Julius Espat said.
“So, it’s a large community with time. We’re just taking it by phases. It’s needed.”
Minister Espat gets emotional when talking about the housing project of his ministry saying it’s the Government’s responsibility to help its people.
“These are people that will have a difficult time ever owning a home. I think it’s our responsibility as Government to give them a fighting chance. And so, yes, it’s emotional. It’s a good thing. And I think the People’s United Party and our Government is fulfilling its mandate.”
MIDH Chief Executive Officer Victor Espat echoed the words of Minister Julius Espat saying the Phase 2 expansion will include an additional 50 houses and gave more details.
“Phase 2 will include provisions for public facilities, including sports fields, a police station, a health clinic, and a preschool,” CEO Espat said.
“And then, we’re also looking at a Phase 3 which will include more housing and a commercial area.”
Espat said Phase 2 should start at the beginning of the next Fiscal Period in April so it’s already in process.
“Phase 3, I would believe that as soon as the funds would be made available to us, then we would be able to continue with Phase 3,” CEO Espat added.
The MIDH said applications for a house under the low-income housing program can be had at the MIDH offices or their website.
