Prime Minister’s vehicle allowance significantly increased to cover maintenance costs

Posted: Wednesday, February 1, 2023. 12:02 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: A screenshot of the Government’s Smartstream accounting program has revealed that Prime Minister John Briceño has been awarded a 207 percent increase in his vehicle allowance.

As of January 11, P.M. Briceño’s car allowance will now amount to four thousand dollars per month, or $48,000 annually, up from $1,300 a month.

According to Cabinet Secretary Stuart Leslie, who authorized the increase, the Prime Minister does not have access to a government-assigned vehicle and thus has to use his own for travelling throughout the country, as he has previously said publicly.

Leslie says this consequently necessitates a degree of maintenance, from tire changes to tune-ups, for which the P.M. must pay for out of pocket. Therefore, this vehicle allowance is the only one that the Prime Minister receives.

Still, there have been grumblings from those who feel these allowances are too much and come at the national expense and particularly that of public servants.
