By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Special Envoy for the development of families and children, Rossana Briceno features outstanding Belizean women making a difference in Belize every week.
Today’s feature is on environmentalist, community supporter and gender activist, Dassia ‘Darcy’ Regalado.
Darcy has lived in Seine Bight Village since she was 5years old.
Darcy attended Ecumenical Junior College and is now pursuing veterinary medicine at Galen University.
“I am passionate about Belize’s wildlife and flora, and my goal is to one day open my own veterinary clinic. Apart from my wildlife passion, I am also a gender-based violence advocate for the National Women’s Commission. I believe that both women and men, including children and teens, have the right to a voice,” she said.
Darcy says that she grew up in a single-parent family, which taught her that women are capable of great things, but sometimes they just need a little push or helping hand.
Darcy is the communication director of the National Students Union of Belize.
She says that he began reinventing plastics because of the damaging effects it has on wildlife and human health.
“I venture into my small plastic-free project, the “D-3 R’S Project,” which stands for reusing, recreating, and reinventing plastic. Plastic has been affecting not just wildlife but also human health. This is why I started the project, where I recycle plastic that I find in random places and create arts such as baskets, plant holders, and paintings on glass bottles to use as decorations,” she added.
Darcy encourages everyone to take risks, “start farming, start that new business you’ve been thinking of. We all start somewhere and don’t be shy to ask when help is needed, after all, we are human beings.”
