By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Jamaica’s Prime Minister, Andrew Holness says that the country is willing to take part in an international military deployment to Haiti, Reuters report.
In October of 2022, the United Nations suggested a “rapid action force” be sent to Haiti since the nation is suffering a humanitarian crisis caused by gangs that have expanded their territory.
Since the 2021 assassination of Haitian President, Jovenel Moise, there have been ongoing gun battles between police and gangs.
The gangs have led bloody turf battles leaving hundreds dead.
Haiti’s Prime Minister, Ariel Henry has requested foreign military support to intervene and assist.
“Jamaica would be willing to participate in a multinational security assistance deployment to Haiti under the appropriate jurisdictional parameters to support a return to a reasonable level of stability and peace,” Holness said.
