By Aaron Humes: A Belize City woman picked up her second conviction for possession of controlled substances after she, her common-law husband, and his sister were jointly charged.
Arthur Higgs, 40; Tamara Cooper, 38; and Michelle Higgs, 45, all of 7th Street King’s Park, Belize City, were read charges on Wednesday of possession of controlled drugs, to wit, 200.1 grams or just over seven ounces of cannabis with intent to supply others for trafficking.
Arthur Higgs was also charged with obstruction for allegedly blocking a police officer’s way into the house to conduct the search on Tuesday, January 31.
Cooper pleaded guilty to the drug charge and was fined $800 and the cost of court to be paid by March 31. She also had to pay an outstanding fine of $400 for a previous charge.
Arthur and Michelle Higgs were offered and met bail of $1,000 each after the court prosecutor elected not to withdraw charges against them. They are both due back in court on March 13.
The obstruction charge against Arthur Higgs will also go ahead after he objected to certain parts of the facts as read out in court, after initially pleading guilty.
Higgs was alleged to have blocked a constable from entering the house and allegedly shouted at Cooper to throw something through the back door; he says he went to the door to throw some food away and met a man in regular clothing at the door who did not identify himself, he said, as a police officer. He did not move out of his way fast enough – but was not obstructing him.
