By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE) is inviting farmers and interested people to attend a bird flu webinar.

MAFSE said the webinar by the Center for Biosecurity Studies entitled ‘BIRD FLU’ Where Are We Now? will be held on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. Belize time.

“The unprecedented spread of avian influenza or ‘bird flu’ globally has been a cause for concern given the increasingly high numbers of bird deaths caused worldwide,” MAFSE said in a social media post.

“This spread has now reached Central and South American countries with cases reported in Peru, Chile, Belize, Columbia, Honduras, and Venezuela.  What is next for the Caribbean?  What can we do?”

Recently, the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) said it had increased surveillance measures as cases of bird flu in pelicans had been reported in Honduras’ Atlantic coast.

MAFSE said four global experts, namely Professor David Stallknecht, Dr. David Swayne, Dr. Richard Webby, and Dr. Thijs Kuiken, will talk on ‘Bird Flu’ and Mammals, Clinical Pathology and Vaccines, Wild Birds and the Environment, and Genomics and Pandemic Risk.

Interested persons may access the webinar by clicking here to register in advance for the webinar.
