Sugar Industry Research and Development Institute (SIRDI) establishes irrigation experiment to determine impact on sugar cane production

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Sugar Industry Research and Development Institute (SIRDI) established an Irrigation experiment using the Water Balance method to determine the impact on sugar cane production, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE) said in a social media post.

“The trial consists of 3 scenarios simulating the different behaviours of the rainfall pattern in a sequence of years [to] determine the impact it has on sugar cane production,” MAFSE said.

“Yesterday, February 1st 2023, the SIRDI research team harvested the Irrigation experiment in sugarcane correspond to B 79474 variety, 3rd Ratoon cycle, in a vertisol soil type, located in Goat Hill area, Chan Pine Ridge.”

MAFSE said the parameters evaluated were stalk growth, stalk girth, and yield.
