Benny’s Belize Hurricanes clash with San Pedro Tiger Sharks on Friday night in Belize City in Belize Elite Basketball League; to suit up Kirk Smith Jr

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Coming off their 90-69 opening week victory over the Punta Gorda Panthers in the Belize Elite Basketball League (BEBL), the Benny’s Belize Hurricanes aim for their second triumph on Friday night at the Belize City Civic Center at 9:00 pm against the San Pedro Tiger Sharks. The islanders are playing their first game as their game against the Belmopan Tigaz was called off that week.

The Hurricanes will be able to suit up Kirk Smith Jr after the League’s appeals committee cleared him. Smith had reportedly signed with two teams, the Hurricanes and the Digi Belize City Defenders. Though Smith had been suspended for a year after both teams failed to reach an agreement, the appeals committee upheld the Hurricanes contract and lifted Smith’s suspension.

The second weekend of action continues Saturday night with the Western Ballaz hosting the Punta Gorda Panthers at the Sacred Heart College Auditorium in San Ignacio at 7:30 pm. While the Panthers are hunting for their first win, the Western Ballaz are looking to make two-in-a-row at home after dumping the Orange Walk Running Rebels 90-67 last week at Sacred Heart.

The Capital will see action for the first time on Saturday as the Belmopan Tigaz step on the court at the UB Gym against the formidable Belize City Defenders at 8:00 pm. The Defenders dropped the Griga Dream Ballers 82-70 in the opening game at the Civic last Friday. For the Tigaz, Saturday’s game will be their first as they were inactive last week since their encounter against the San Pedro Tiger Sharks had to be rescheduled.

The Griga Dream Ballers have a break at redemption on Saturday night against the Orange Walk Running Rebels at 9:00 pm at the Russell ‘Chiste’ Garcia Auditorium in Dangriga. The Running Rebels fell 90-67 last week to the Cayo Western Ballaz, so they too are looking to bounce back.
