Fake Belize permanent residency Cards discovered in possession of Chinese Nationals

Posted: Friday, February 3, 2023. 11:36 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Recently, 9 Chinese nationals were deported via the Philip Goldson International Airport (PGIA).

On February 2, 2023, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, Eamon Courtenay confirmed that the Chinese nationals had in their possession fake permanent residency cards.

Courtenay says that an investigation is ongoing.

“I have been shown files where it is clear as day that fraud has been committed, permanent residence cards have been issued fraudulently. Those that we have seen have been canceled and it is my expectation that there will be an investigation and a report by the police and I would hope that whoever was involved in it will have their day in court. It only came to the fore because there is a daily monitoring of flights coming into Belize and the place of origin and in very late December it was observed that an unusually high number of Chinese nationals were coming from a specific part of China which is not where most Chinese come from who come to Belize,” Courtenay said.

Courtenay says that it is evident that fraud has been committed and he hopes that those involved will face charges for those actions.
