By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Different organizations, particularly health organizations, in Belize and the world today, Friday, February 3, are wearing red as part of the International Wear Red Day movement to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease as a leading cause of death.
The American Heart Association says one of every three deaths in the United States is caused by heart disease.
Here in Belize, the hospitals and associations like the Rotary Club’s Gift of Life Belize and the People’s Diabetes Foundation, have joined the international movement.
“People’s Diabetes Foundation-Belize and People’s Diabetes Foundation are wearing Red to join the campaign in drawing attention that Hypertension (High blood pressure) and Diabetes are risk factors for heart disease and stroke,” the People’s Diabetes Foundation-Belize said in a social media post.
“Join us! Let’s do this together.”
“February is heart month, spreading awareness of CHD (Congenital Heart Disease) is necessary,” the Rotary Club’s Gift of Life Belize said.
“The Rotary Club of Belize through our Gift of Life program has helped and given knowledge, hope, and life saving surgeries to children with CHD over the last 46 years. Join us in raising awareness today by wearing red and hashtag #rotarybelize #WearRedDay #HeartMonth #GiftofLifeBelize #CHDAwareness Gift of Life Belize.”
International Wear Red Day is observed on the first Friday in February.
