By Aaron Humes: The House of Representatives gave its acclamation for the late William Dawson, the director of the Leadership Intervention Unit (LIU) who died last week.
Prime Minister John Briceño said his first and only meeting with Dawson was during the recent Cabinet Retreat, where he bravely rose to present on his work with the program he was appointed to lead by Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa.
But in that time, he was struck by the fact that the clearly ailing man before him was “no ordinary Belizean” but someone who had given his life to public service and particularly to those who were down and out in society, first as a teacher and social worker, then at the Wagner’s Youth Facility at the Central Prison in Hattieville, and most recently with the LIU as well as an interventionist working with the Police Department.
The Executive was impressed enough to give its unanimous support, not knowing that Dawson would not live to see whether his efforts bore fruit.
“I am also told that one of the happiest moments for Mister Dawson was when I declared Southside Belize City a Special Development Area,” the Prime Minister noted, stating it would “honour his memory” to ensure that this initiative becomes successful.
The P.M. announced that an “appropriate honour” from the National Honours and Awards Committee would be given to Dawson posthumously at September’s Tribute to Belizean Patriots ceremony.
Later, Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow repeated his wishes on Dawson’s passing.
Funeral services for Dawson were held earlier this week. May he rest in peace.
