By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On February 2, 2023, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, Eamon Courtenay informed Belizeans that the Government of Belize and the U.S. have reached a deal to re-settle a former Guantanamo Bay inmate, Majid Khan, who was held under suspicion as a terrorist in Guantanamo Bay.
U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Brian A. Nichols says that Belize’s decision represents an important humanitarian gesture.
“Belize’s decision to resettle Majid Khan represents an important humanitarian gesture. Belize’s strong commitment to human rights is a credit to its people,” Nichols said.
“Belize’s commitment to human rights, as evidenced by its generous support in working with the United States to resettle Mr. Khan in a safe and secure setting, is a credit to the people of Belize and its government. In welcoming Mr. Khan to Belize, its people again demonstrate the tolerance and openness for which they are known. I am grateful for this cooperation and our strong partnership with Belize,” Nichols added.
