Accused rapist remains in custody as DPP considers charges: no bail yet

By Aaron Humes: 36-year-old Luis Alejandro Rios Loaiza, a Colombian national and computer technician, remains on remand at the Belize Central Prison on a charge of rape.

Rios Loaiza is accused of raping a 23-year-old woman on August 19, 2022, and was denied bail and remanded in his first appearance.

When he asked for bail as is his right from Senior Magistrate Tricia Pitts-Anderson, the court prosecutor indicated that his immigration status is still in question, leaving open the possibility that he could be a flight risk and not show up for trial.

Also, the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) is perusing the case file and determining the direction the case will take. Rape is a charge normally tried on indictment at the High Court.

The Senior Magistrate adjourned the case to February 23 and advised Rios Loaiza to obtain an attorney and seek bail from the High Court.
