Estate of deceased Belize City woman, 81, to receive compensation for injury by common-law husband, 37

Posted: Saturday, February 4, 2023. 11:00 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: High Court Justice Ricardo O’Neil Sandcroft on Friday handed down a suspended prison sentence to a man accused of wounding his much older common-law partner in her forehead with a hatchet, and further ordered him to pay her estate compensation for the injury.

Shareef Bilal, now 37, hit Constance Flowers, then 79, in the forehead with a hatchet, causing a cut wound, on March 1, 2021, at their shared residence on Kraal Road, Belize City.

Bilal pleaded guilty to the charge and was awaiting sentencing when Flowers died at the age of 81, but not from the wound – she suffered complications from hypertension (high blood pressure).

Justice Sandcroft sentenced Bilal to two years imprisonment, suspended, and ordered compensation to the estate of the deceased Flowers in the sum of $2,005 due by December 13, 2023.

Due to the death of Flowers, the virtual complainant, the compensation will be awarded to her estate and heirs.
