By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Some 80 Haitians reportedly arrived at the Philip Goldson International Airport on Friday, February 3, 2023.
According to a report by 7News Belize, many of them had $100 US or 2- $50 bills inside their passports.
This tactic is well-known in several neighboring countries as a ‘mordida’ tactic to allow easy entry.
Minister of Immigration Eamon Courtenay noted that on Friday, January 27, 2023, almost 60% of travelers from Panama on Copa Airlines and travelers from El Salvador on Tropic Air were Haitians.
Courtenay said that the Ministry is concerned about an “elaborate international network that is smuggling Haitians” through Belize with their final destination to be the U.S.
Courtenay said that the Ministry is actively reviewing that measures need to be put in place stem the flow of Haitians into Belize.
